Maybe it was because more than 24 hours had passed, but the rice had lost some of its fragrance and pleasant chew. I was so hungry at the time that I hadn’t bothered to check the production date.

Opening the package, I was first greeted by a spice aroma I couldn’t quite identify, with a distinctly western Chinese character. The first thing to reach my tongue was a touch of sweetness, followed by a gentle, fragrant heat. Finally, fashionably late, came a little hint of our friend Mr. Ginger.

The chicken was still fairly tender. The potatoes and carrots had been stewed until completely soft, while the wood ear mushrooms were crunchy.

But I have no idea what they did to this egg. Dry, hard, and just not good. Did they roast it in an oven or something?
