If the Hunan-Style Spicy Pork Jumbo Onigiri is the express version of a pork-and-pepper rice bowl, then this Classic Hunan-Style Combo Rice Bowl is undoubtedly the Pro Max version.

It certainly lives up to the “classic” part: the two main dishes are stir-fried pork and peppers and waipo cai (stir-fried preserved vegetables), with sweet-and-spicy diced radish on the side. Having grown up in a Hunan family, I knew from the aroma alone that these were familiar flavors. But perhaps to cater to tastes in Hainan, it wasn’t noticeably spicy to me.

The stir-fried pork and peppers are the same as the filling in the onigiri. Really putting that inventory to work. The waipo cai tastes much like what you’d get at a typical Hunan restaurant.

Overall, it tastes about the same as the freshly cooked ¥17 meals from the Hunan fast-food place near my home. At a discount, this one’s an absolute banger.
